FAQs

What is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is a designer dog breed that is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. This hybrid aims to combine the gentle, loyal nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. Bernedoodles come in various sizes depending on the size of the Poodle parent (standard, mini, or toy), and they are known for their friendly disposition, making them excellent family pets.

What is a Bernedoodle F1B?

A Bernedoodle F1B refers to a specific generation in the breeding process. "F1B" stands for "First Generation Backcross." This means the dog is bred from an F1 Bernedoodle (first generation, a direct cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle) and either a Poodle or another Bernese Mountain Dog. An F1B Bernedoodle typically has more Poodle genes, which usually results in a coat that sheds less and might be hypoallergenic, appealing to those with allergies.

Do Bernedoodles shed, and how is the shedding different from normal dogs?

Bernedoodles are known for being low-shedding dogs, but this can vary. The shedding level largely depends on the genetics inherited from their parents. F1B or multigenerational Bernedoodles, which have more Poodle in their lineage, tend to shed less than F1 Bernedoodles. Their coat can range from curly to wavy, and while they don't shed as much as many other breeds, they still require regular grooming to manage matting and keep their coat healthy. Unlike many dogs that have a double coat and shed seasonally or continuously, Bernedoodles lose less hair, which makes them a better choice for people concerned about pet hair around their home.

Are Bernedoodles good family dogs and good around kids?

Temperament: Bernedoodles inherit the friendly, affectionate, and patient nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog, combined with the intelligence and playful energy of the Poodle. This mix often results in a dog that is loving, loyal, and eager to please, making them well-suited for family life.

Adaptability: They are adaptable to various living situations, from apartments to houses with large yards, as long as they get enough exercise. Their size can vary, but even larger Bernedoodles are known for being gentle.

Patience with Children: Bernedoodles tend to be very patient with kids. Their gentle demeanor means they often tolerate the sometimes rough play of children well. However, like with all dogs, interaction should be supervised, especially with very young children, to ensure both the child's and the dog's safety.

Activity Level: They enjoy activities that can involve the whole family, like walks, fetch, or even simple playtime in the backyard. This can be a great way for kids to learn responsibility and for the dog to burn off energy.

Socialization: With proper socialization from a young age, Bernedoodles can be very sociable and good with other pets and people, further enhancing their suitability as family pets.
